In case you missed the announcement at one of the performances of this year’s Alphabet Soup: Stories from Queer Voices, Whim Productions has refined our mission: We now exclusively produce the works of LGBTQ+ playwrights. We’re so excited to have this singular focus that will bring the lives and experiences of the queer community to Kansas City stages!
We’ve also added to our team! Joining Kevin King, founder and Producing Artistic Director, on the newly-formed Artistic Committee are Diane Hightower, Vince Wagner, and our newest member, Tony Sloan. Diane is also serving as Whim’s Outreach Coordinator. She’s making connections with LGBTQ+ and allied organizations serving the Kansas City region.
On Sept 13th, Whim Productions is thrilled to bring Jay Pryor and their show The Gender Reveal Party to The Buffalo Room!
Part stand-up, part storytelling theater, The Gender Reveal Party recounts Jay Pryor’s journey from tomboy to butch dyke to “undercover white guy” and beyond. This show has played to sold-out audiences in Lawrence. Don’t miss your chance to see it for yourself!
This is an extraordinarily frank, moving, and comic production. Pryor shares tales of their childhood in a rough part of Kansas, moving away, and ultimately finding their way back home: both to Midwest and to their own body and identity. The show gives an evocative and educational that will change how you consider gender and identity.
This show is 100% authentic, vulnerable, and hilarious.
Doors open at 7 pm // Show starts at 8 pm // Tickets: $20
Arrive early to get your dinner and drink orders in! The Buffalo Room has a full-service restaurant and bar. While it’s the kitchen for Westport Flea Market, be sure to place orders with the Buffalo Room staff.
There’s still time to submit work to the 2020 Alphabet Soup!
Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ community with an idea for a short play that’s been dying to come out? We’re accepting script submissions until Sept 15. Submissions should focus on LGBTQ+ characters and be no more than 10 minutes in length. Don’t worry if you’ve never written a play before! We put the selected scripts through a workshop process so they’ll have a chance to grow before they get on stage. Each year, we have scripts from playwrights who have never written a play before. Get to writing and submit a play to be part of this cultural event for the LGBTQ community!
Consider making a financial contribution to support local queer theater!
