Enrollment starts now for classes starting Jan. 17
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument or take a fun fitness class? Now is the time. The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance Academy is taking registrations for adult group classes and kids’ classes, which start Jan. 17.
“The Academy is excited to offer new music and dance classes this spring,” said Elizabeth Valle, program assistant, Community Music and Dance Academy, UMKC Conservatory. “We have classes from Musikgarten for infants and toddlers, to adult piano and guitar. We even have a fit barre class for teens and adults. Between our new classes and private lessons, there is something for everybody, no matter your level or age.”
Adult group classes
Piano, $160, Wednesdays, 6 p.m., Room 105A, Grant Hall, 5228 Charlotte, Kansas City, Mo.
This class is designed for adult beginners. The group setting is ideal for any adult who has always wanted to play the piano or for adults who played the piano as children and want to return to playing. Students will learn basic music notation, basic piano technique and repertoire.
Guitar, $160, Tuesdays, 1 p.m., Room 208, Charlotte House, 5301 Charlotte St., Kansas City, Mo.
This adult beginning guitar class includes instruction to develop basic guitar skills and technique for pop music accompaniment styles. No prior experience is required. Students will learn some music theory and chord transposition. An acoustic guitar and a folder for worksheet handouts to class will be needed.
Fit barre, $160, day and time to be determined, Studio 128, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.
Fit barre is a dance-inspired workout class that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements. This class is a total body workout that will tone your body and burn fat.
Family Music-Musikgarten Early Childhood Music and Movement Classes (ages infant – 4), $80 per 8-week session, Mondays, 5:30 – 6:15 p.m., Room 126, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.
This class is designed to bring the joy of music and movement to young children and their caregivers. Activities include singing, dancing, focused listening and simple instrument playing. Activities will connect music and movement, while developing the child’s musical aptitude and listening abilities. This is offered as two 8-week sessions. Each family must purchase one $40 materials packet for home use. The packet for both sessions includes a parent guide, CD and an instrument/musical prop for home use.
Piano Readiness (ages 4 – 6), $160, Saturdays, 10 – 10:45 a.m., Room 105A, Grant Hall, 5228 Charlotte, Kansas City, Mo.
This class is a transition from programs such as Musikgarten to private piano lessons. Children will learn the basics of piano technique and practice, and play musical games that introduce basic musical notation and rhythm. There is a class recital at the end of the semester.
Roo Singers (grades 3 – 6), $160, Tuesdays, 6:30 – 7:15 p.m., Room 208, Charlotte House, 5301 Charlotte St., Kansas City, Mo.
Roo Singers foster a love of music and the development of musical skills through diverse choral literature of different eras, languages and levels and by varied classroom and performance settings. Singers, parents, teachers and audience members form a community of choral singing that enhances the performing arts experience for everyone involved.
Creative Movement (ages 3 – 5), $160, Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Studio 128, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.
This class introduces the child to concepts such as creating shapes (still positions), directions, different movement (slow/fast), traveling steps, repeating simple patterns, parts of a dance (beginning, middle, end) and simple choreography. Children will have special time each class for spontaneous dancing. There will be a recital during the last class.
