About the Author:

Madeleine L’Engle (pronounced leng el’) finished the book in 1963 and won The Newbery Medal for it.  Twenty-six publishers earlier rejected it, but one loved it.  People loved it too.  It has become a modern classic of children’s literature.   This book became the first in a quintet of connected books she wrote.  After A WRINKLE IN TIME, she wrote A WIND AT THE DOOR.  Her third book in the series is A SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET.  The fourth book in the series is MANY WATERS, and the final book in the quintet is AN ACCEPTABLE TIME.    All in all, she wrote more than sixty books for young people.   She was also an actress and a stage manager in plays.  Later, after she raised four children, she became the librarian at the Cathedral Church of St John the Divine.  She died September 6, 2007

Gene Mackey, executive director of the theatre, wanted to adapt the book to theatrical form that children could come to experience in person. Gene is a prolific playwright and has a great interest in space and science fiction literature. When he was a young boy in Arkansas, he built an observatory on the roof of his grandmother’s barn so that he could study the stars. He filled many notebooks with his science fiction writings as a teenager. Gene has also written original science fiction plays that have been produced at Theatre for Young America, but this is his favorite.
