Batter Up!! Opening the 2020-2021 Theatre Lawrence season is the two-man comedy, Rounding Third, taking the outdoor stage for 4 scheduled performances from September 18-26. Audiences will be offered seating in socially distanced “pods” in the parking lot. Invite relatives or friends to share a pod (up to 4 people) or enjoy the fun solo from the comfort of your lawn chair!
Described as a “modern day Odd Couple,” Rounding Third tells the story of two polar opposite Little League coaches who are thrown together to coach their sons’ team.
Don (Dylan Hart) is a complete parody of the blue collar, middle-aged, win-obsessed Little League coach. As he sees it, kids fall into two categories: those who like baseball and those who prefer Broadway musicals.
New assistant coach Michael (Ryan Hamlin), a corporate executive, takes a different approach with the kids. He urges them not to worry so much about wins and losses and to go out there, give it their best and have some fun. While Don’s kid is a pitching ace, Michael’s son, we learn, is the kind of fielder who spends his time kicking dandelions.
Richard Dresser’s Rounding Third takes a humorous look at how our culture is teaching our kids–and parents–to deal with competition and success. The differences drive this funny, acerbic and touching play through the bumpy terrain of not only baseball, but fatherhood as well. With the bases loaded, Don and Michael batter-up and hilariously take on the great American pastime with exhilarating victories, heartbreaking defeats, and life lessons that are sure to hit home.
