The Last Romance, a comedy by Joe DiPietro, will open at Theatre Lawrence on January 20, 2017.
The play is built around Ralph Bellini’s pursuit of romance, as he searches to escape from the constricting life he leads as a widower sharing a small apartment with his sister. A frustrated opera singer, he yearns to bring into his daily life some of the grand passions he once imagined enacting on the stage. And he cherishes the memories of the performances he has attended at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan where he could experience those passions vicariously.
His meeting with Carol at a local dog park means that romance is not completely thwarted by the everyday obligations of family. Ralph pursues Carol, and comes very close to the romantic adventure of a lifetime, showing once again that love and joy remain within our grasp at any age.
As the show progresses, the action is punctuated by short arias sung by Ralph’s younger self that comment on the story.
The show is under the direction of Carole Ries and features Chuck Mosley as Ralph, Penni Hansen as his sister Rose, Cindy McCullough as Carol and Brian Sussman as the young opera singer, and of course the dog, Peaches.
The show will run January 20, 21 and 22; and January 26, 27, 28 and 29. Evening performances begin at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30pm.
