Residencies for 1st-12th Grade Classrooms

The Coterie’s In Person Classroom Immersions are three 50-minute residencies exploring theatre with your class. A vaccinated & masked professional teaching artist will join your class with an interactive lesson plan that reaches English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards for both Kansas and Missouri.

Students will work with a vaccinated/masked teaching artist in your classroom to rehearse and perform a short script based on a folktale, focusing on reading fluency, intonation, flow, and expression.
A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to serve the needs of your class and select a multicultural folktale from our list.
The residency will align with MO and KS English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards.

Three 50-minute sessions can be arranged to suit your schedule.

Students will work with a vaccinated/masked teaching artist in your classroom to write and perform a short first person monologue about a “hero” (based on a historical/real figure).
Using existing monologues as examples, students will analyze what makes a good monologue and demonstrate that understanding through their own original writing.
A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to ensure we serve the needs of your class.
The residency will align with MO and KS English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards, and will offer students the option to share their work with each other.

Three 50-minute sessions can be arranged to suit your schedule

Students will view a performance of The Masque of the Red Death OR The Pit and the Pendulum (determined by classroom instructor) from The Coterie’s production of Electric Poe starring professional actor and teaching artist R.H. Whilhoit, underscore by musician Rex Hobart.
Wilhoit will then join students in person as their vaccinated/masked teaching artist to explore the historical and cultural context that inspired Poe, as well as the use of symbolism and imagery to create lasting impact.
Writing to composer Rex Hobart’s Electric Poe underscore as inspiration, students will create their own moody masterpiece in the form of a dramatic scene or monologue.
A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to ensure we serve the needs of your class.
The residency will align with MO and KS English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards, and will offer students the option to share their work with each other.

Mobile Molière

An eccentric 17^th-century roaming theatre troupe searches for a stage and an audience for a jumble of Molière’s “greatest hits”. But what happens when the most eccentric of them all, Molière himself, reaches the end of his path? UMKC Theatre’s MFA actors bring their riotous romp of a touring show to local schools, performing some of Molière’s most famous and hilarious scenes.

A 50-minute performance for middle and high school audiences
