The Coterie presents Mesner Puppets production of The Snowy Day and other stories by Ezra Jack Keats, which celebrates the magic and boundless possibilities of the first snowfall! Follow Peter and his friends as they romp and play, starting snow ball fights and making snow angels in this uplifting musical play about childhood joys and living life to the fullest each day.  Using inventive puppetry, Keats’ little boy in the red coat comes to life in this charming story collection of Whistle for WillieGoggles!A Letter to Amy, and The Snowy Day.

Virtual Residencies for Grades 1st-12th

Whether your students are virtual, in person, or both,
The Coterie
 can be a virtual guest in your classroom!

The Coterie’s Classroom Immersions are three one-hour residencies with your class exploring theatre. A professional teaching artist will virtually join your class to do an interactive lesson plan that reaches English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards for both Kansas and Missouri. 


Grades 1-4

  • Students will work with a professional teaching artist to rehearse and perform a short script based on a folktale, focusing on reading fluency, intonation, flow, and expression.
  • A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to best serve the needs of your class and select a multicultural folktale from our list.
  • The residency will align with Missouri and Kansas English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards.

$180 for three 60-minute sessions per classroom sized group
(or six 30-minute sessions for $200; 10% discount for 4 or more classrooms)


Grades 4-8

  • Students will work with a professional teaching artist to write and perform a short first person monologue about a “hero” (based on a historical/real figure).
  • Using existing monologues as examples, students will analyze what makes a good monologue and demonstrate that understanding through their own original writing.
  • A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to ensure we serve the needs of your class.
  • The residency will align with Missouri and Kansas English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards, and will offer students the option to share their work with each other.

Three 50-minute sessions can be arranged to suit your schedule:
$180 per classroom sized group.  (10% discount for 4 or more classrooms.)


Grades 8-12

  • Students will virtually view a performance of Masque of the Red Death from The Coterie’s production of Electric Poe starring professional actor and teaching artist R.H. Wilhoit, underscored by musician Rex Hobart.
  • Wilhoit will virtually join students to explore the historical and cultural context that inspired Poe’s Masque of the Red Death and Poe’s use of symbolism and imagery to create lasting impact.
  • Finally, students will create their own moody masterpiece to submit to The Coterie in the form of a dramatic scene or monologue.
  • A teacher consultation will occur beforehand to ensure we serve the needs of your class.
  • The residency will align with Missouri and Kansas English Language Arts and Theatre Arts standards, and will offer students the option to share their work with each other.

NOW FREE FOR EDUCATORS
Any educator may access A Kids Play About Racism free of charge for use in their classroom – whether they be virtual, in person, or homeschooled. Participants receive an Active Educational Audience Guide with post-show activities and tools for K-5th Grades. Educators need only to fill out a form verifying they are a teacher to gain password access to the show:

BRAINSTORM
The Inside Life of the Teenage Mind

BRAINSTORM is a theatrical investigation made up of: scientific content (information on the brain) and personal content (stories and experiences which make sense of the science). The scenes include social media/peers/parents/risk-taking, and ways the teen brain responds, questions, adapts and experiments. Based on the latest science and created in collaboration with neuroscientists, the impact of the play on teen and adult audiences is profound and long-lasting. Parts of the script will be devised by local middle and high school students.
