The Renegade Princesses of DISENCHANTED are Ready to Set the Record Straight at Starlight Indoors

After selling out venues across the country, this not-for-the-kiddos musical will bring irreverent, fairy tale fun to Starlight Theatre audiences March 7-19

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Poisoned apples. Glass slippers. Who needs ‘em?! Not Snow White and her posse of disenchanted princesses coming to Kansas City to stir things up indoors at Starlight Theatre! A hilarious hit musical that’s anything but Grimm,DISENCHANTED rings in spring in Starlight’s climate-controlled Cohen Community Stage House on March 7-19.

Forget the princesses you think you know because the original storybook heroines have come back to life – to set the record straight! The royal renegades of DISENCHANTEDhave tossed off their tiaras and sold out theatres across the country delivering this sassy and somewhat subversive show.

The storybook journey for DISENCHANTED began in 2011 with a sold-out run at Orlando’s International Fringe Festival. The Orlando Festival awarded it “Best of Fest” honors. Subsequent licensing of the show led to more than a dozen U.S. productions, from New Jersey to California. After gaining critical acclaim domestically, the funny fairy tale went international with a production in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a fall 2016 run in Toronto and a planned engagement in Beijing.

During its Off-Broadway run in 2014-15, NBC New York called DISENCHANTED “funny, irreverent and great fun!” while Time Out New York stated, “If you love fairy tales with a sassy modern twist, relief is here. The Huffington Post called it “funny and a touch wicked.” Broadway Box raved, “Think Bridesmaids for Disney Princesses! This side-splitting adult parody of the Disney princess posse and its mega-talented cast will make you blush and feel nostalgic all at once.”

Show creator and former history teacher Dennis T. Giacino got the idea forDISENCHANTED while teaching his class about the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Va. A musician at heart, Giacino penned a musical number skewering the “princess pop culture” that transformed Pocahontas from a revered Native American heroine into a “pin-up vixen” of the silver screen. Soon, he found himself discovering a number of other princesses with a bone to pick with the way they have been popularly portrayed.

“DISENCHANTED’S unforgettable lyrics and rambunctious physical comedy are the ideal way to wrap up the second full season of Starlight Indoors,” said Caroline Gibel, Starlight’s director of indoor programming. “Since last October, we’ve introduced thousands of Kansas Citians to unconventional shows in our intimate indoor setting. The word is getting out that our audiences have a lot of fun at these new, modern musical comedies at Starlight!”

The sassy six-princess cast of DISENCHANTED features Merritt Crews (Snow White),Madison Hayes-Crook (Cinderella), Daniella Richards (Sleeping Beauty), Miriam Drysdale(The Little Mermaid, Belle, Rapunzel), Ann Paula Bautista (Hua Mulan, Pocahontas, Princess Badroulbadour) and Cherise Thomas (The Princess Who Kissed the Frog).

Guests attending any of the 16 performances of DISENCHANTED at Starlight Indoors will be sitting comfortably in the heated 12,000-square-foot Cohen Community Stage House; 500 seats are available for each performance.

Show times for DISENCHANTED on Tuesday-Thursday are 7 p.m.; Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sundays, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Self-parking is free for all shows, and valet parking is available for $10. DISENCHANTED is recommended for audiences 14+
