Spinning Tree announces Once on this Island cast
Spinning Tree Theatre proudly announces the cast of Once on this Island, playing April 20 – May 6. The Caribbean-influenced musical folktale tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with the well-born Daniel and is aided by the gods and goddesses of earth, water and love in her quest to be with him. Once on this Island is a rousing song-and-dance celebration of the power of storytelling, love in the face of death and the strength of the human spirit.
The all-Kansas City production of the musical (currently enjoying a hit Broadway revival) is directed by Nedra Dixon, with music direction by Pamela Baskin-Watson and choreography by Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst. Dixon has starred in Spinning Tree productions of Black Pearl Sings! and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. Baskin-Watson played piano for Spinning Tree’s productions of Nine and Finian’s Rainbow and, along with Dixon and Angela Hagenbach, is a member of Kansas City’s jazz trio Book of Gaia. Grayman-Parkhurst, co-founder and Managing Director of Spinning Tree, assisted choreographer Rob Ashford on the Broadway production of Curtains and served as Dance Captain on the Broadway tour of Mamma Mia! for over 2,000 performances.
Newcomer Allison Jones stars as Ti Moune with Hagenbach as Mama Euralie, Granvile O’Neal as TonTon Julian and Matthew A. King as Daniel. The gods and goddesses are portrayed by Darrington Clark (Papa Ge), Keshana Cook (Erzulie), Linnaia McKenzie (Asaka) and Douglass Walker (Agwe). The cast is completed by Da’Merius Ford as Armand, Morgan Walker as Andrea and Jahnaya Thomas as Small Girl/Little Ti Moune. Three of the performers are Spinning Tree alum: Hagenbach (Liliane LaFleur in Nine), King (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Violet and Ain’t Misbehavin’) and McKenzie (Violet and Ain’t Misbehavin’).
The Island team includes stage manager Averie Warren, lighting designer Nicole Jaja, costume designer Shannon Smith-Regnier, sound designer Jeff Eubank, properties designer Eric Palmquist and assistant stage manager Victoria Barbee. The orchestra includes Baskin-Watson on keyboard, Kaytee Dietrich on reeds, John Gilmore and Julian Goff on percussion and Brian Wilson on bass.
