“The House of Bernarda Alba” opened Friday, June 21 at the Just Off Broadway Theatre as the first of three productions by Relevance Productions and featured a cast of college students from Scott Cox’s classes, all giving dynamic performances in a tightly moving macabre story of a widow and her five daughters.

The head of the house has died and the widow undertakes the responsibility of keeping her five daughters imprisoned in her house for eight years of mourning, all clad appropriately in black mourning clothing (except for her favorite). The chilling tale, akin to Edgar Allen Poe stories tells the story of lust for men, sex, and a normal life beyond what the girls know. The sinister mother imprisons the girls as well as her own mother who longs for escape as well. Only a maid penetrates the walls of the house and the inmates’ lives.

Bob Evans

The story is dark, chilling, full of sexual tension, and features brilliant acting by the young thespians. Striking makeup and the story make this a compelling and surprising story. The show runs 60-full minutes with no time for curtain calls and applause. Be prepared for something quite different and rich for the Fringe Festival,
