Hollow Roots is written by award-winning Kansas City native Christina Anderson.
The show played Off-Broadway as part of the Under the Radar Festival of New York’s Public Theatre in 2013. Anderson’s Black Top Sky was developed at Yale School of Drama in 2011 and was produced by Unicorn Theatre in 2013. Man in Love, was part of the 2017 Origin KC Festival at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre.
Hollow Roots questions the notion of a “post-racial” society. Diving into one woman’s quest to understand her identity, she asks if it is possible for a person to live their life unaffected by race or gender. This exquisite and transporting text chronicles this woman’s journey, accompanied by a vivid videoscape of her mind’s eye and live cello music recalling the sounds of her childhood.
Directed by Daniel Banks with actress Nicole Gramlich, musician/composer Maritri Garrett, video designer Kate Freer, costume and set designer Murell Horton, lighting designer Driscoll Otto and stage manager Alexis Miles.
