Present: #WTF Happened? On the Phenomenon of Trump
In the Fringe Festival KC 2018
Actors Repertory Theatre Luxembourg (Actors Rep), a professional English-language theatre company based in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, is proud to announce the US debut of its critically acclaimed show, #WTF Happened? On the Phenomenon of Trump.
The play, an original solo piece written and performed by Actors Rep Artistic Director Erik Abbott, will be presented for five performances in the Fringe Festival KC 2018 in July on the Musical Theatre Heritage (MTH) main stage at Crown Center in Kansas City, MO.
KC’s Kokopelli Theatre Company will co-produce locally with Actors Rep. #WTF Happened? On the Phenomenon of Trump is the only production appearing in this year’s Fringe from outside the US.
#WTF Happened? On the Phenomenon of Trump was originally commissioned by Théâtre d’Esch in
Luxembourg. Short segments of the piece were performed in May 2017 as a part of the annual Cultural
Night in the city of Esch-sur-Alzette. Actors Rep produced a revised version of the entire play, directed by Actors Rep Associate Artistic Director Christine Probst, in September 2017 at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg in Luxembourg City.
The production received rave reviews in Luxembourg’s English-language press:
- “…a series of perfectly balanced Erik Abbott excels in a myriad of roles the sheer phusicality of his performance, his ability to make each character authencic, make the play a success. The audience leaves breathless and with new perspectives… and having been highly entertained.” (Duncan Roberts, Delano magazine)
- “…a very enjoyable night at the theatre… you laugh out loud, but… you think about the uncertain times we are facing…” (Janine Goedert, d’Lëtzebuerger Land)
- “…vividly brought to life… [a] refreshing performance… we see our own stereotyped views unravel.” (Sarita Rao, Luxembourg Times)
- “Stupendous show, absolutely stupendous!’ (Wendy Winn, Chronicle.lu)
In this newly revised version, Abbott portrays several Trump supporters from a Coal Miner to a member of Congress. The characters, some of whose monologues are loosely based on published interviews with real voters, present a variety of voices and viewpoints—alternately sympathetic, funny, perhaps frightening—and reveal a complex emotional and cultural tapestry examining the Trump effect in a compelling, theatrical way.
Inspired by the headlines and challenging assumptions across the political spectrum, #WTF Happened? On the Phenomenon of Trump is a dramatic exploration of the curious phenomenon of the Donald Trump Presidency—how the brash billionaire developer and reality television personality blustered his way to the Presidency. It considers his controversial term in office and its effects on the lives and views of his supporters, questioning whether the President represents a new and profound movement in the body politic or just another way to increase the value of the Trump brand.
