In a departure from KC Applauds normal posts, The Jewish Community Center of Kansas City sent the following request:

URGENT NEED (begins Sunday, June 24-Wednesday June 27): Several KC-area Jewish organizations, under the banner of Jewish Voices United, will collect items for the approximately 50 children, ages 6-17, who have been separated from their parents and brought to Kansas. The items (mostly boys) needs are: underwear/socks (only new and unused, please), CD players and Spanish CDs (especially for bedtime), age-appropriate toys, arts and crafts supplies, and school supplies. Bring your items to the front lobby of the Jewish Community Campus: 5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park, KS 66211

The mission of Jewish Voices United: A Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Kansas City is to use social action to stand with those who feel most vulnerable and persecuted in our community by demonstrating support for and promoting positive relationships among our city’s diverse populations.

Jewish Voices United* is currently comprised of 12 Jewish organizations; Those leading this effort include Jewish Vocational Services, Jewish Family Services, the Jewish Community Center and Congregation Beth Torah.

To donate directly, please visit jvskc.org/give and put “Immigrant children donation drive” in the comments. Here is also a link to the Facebook page post: https://www.facebook.com/events/1057450687770219/

I continue to believe that KC Applauds needs to focus on the performing arts and avoid political issues, but my entire teaching career was devoted to teaching, counseling, and appreciating the goodness of youth–all youth–good/bad, rich/poor, athletic/non-athletic, motivated/unmotivated. However they came, that’s who I loved and worked alongside. I cannot stand by and not speak for those who have no voice in this horrific situation.

You may or may not agree with what is happening currently, but these children did not create this problem. They are victims, and I stand with them.

Thank you for understanding my personal interlude in helping children.

Bob
