Dixie’s back. And, Starlight’s got her in a virtual new show, “Happy Hour,” where the red-haired, gum chomping Southerner gives simple recipes for tequila, rum, vodka, and gin.
You’ll indulge with Alabama’s favorite one-woman show as Dixie spins tales of her past, including stories she learned from her mama and memaw in her 38 years. Even though mama and memaw are gone, Dixie remembers their life lessons and mixes in her personal experiences along with insights into her life.
According to Dixie, sparkle, glitter, and shine are important for a successful. Of course, as Dixie enlightens the audience on how to create Happy Hour cocktails, she continues to imbibe them. Dixie’s life lessons aim to guide the audience to better happiness. From the trailer park, Dixie Longate sees life from a less than clear-eyed reality.
“Everyone’s favorite Alabama redhead returns in Dixie’s Happy Hour—an all-new streaming show playing January 26-31 as a part of Starlight@Home,” according to Starlight. “If you’ve been to the smash off-Broadway hit ‘Dixie’s Tupperware Party’ or spent time with her in ‘Dixie’s Never Wear a Tube Top While Riding a Mechanical Bull (and 16 other things I learned while I was drinking last Thursday)’ then you know Dixie’s sweet charm and infectious southern drawl will keep you in stitches all evening long.”
Written by Kris Andersson, the third installment of the Dixie series has a run time of about 100 minutes without an intermission. The show streams through tickets purchased through Starlight Theatre for their annual Starlight Indoor season. The show opened on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, and runs for one week.
America’s favorite Tupperware saleslady, Dixie Longate comes from the creative mind of drag performer Kris Andersson who has performed the character of Dixie Longate since 2007 in five countries. Andersson, an actor, comedian, writer, and drag performer marks his third show with Starlight.
“To know Dixie is to love Dixie, and we could all use a little love right now,” Caroline Gibel, Starlight’s director of indoor programming, said. “In her twelve years of touring, Dixie has truly become a friend of performing arts venues across the country including our historic theatre—she created this show specifically to support these venues in the pandemic.”
Of special note, Dixie explains how glitter, sparkle, shine, fringe, and attitude shape a person’s day. A stunning jacket, she says is made from some scraps of material, lots of fringe, and shiny sparkles that turn rags into riches.
Without spoiling her thunder, the infrequent four-letter words and booze, help Dixie explains how and why she purchased 18 bedazzlers one night after just a bit much of intoxicating spirits led to her online shopping-spree. Dixie explains how this purchase helped her transform a plain, simple object into a glistening spectacle. And, according to Dixie, a little sparkle next hurts, yet a lot of sparkles allows objects and people to shine.
That’s right. Dixie wants her viewers to sparkle and shine. And, that’s her lesson. A beauty queen’s tiara helps transform her into Wonder Woman at times. Ms. Longate’s Happy Hour aims to help everyone learn to bring out his or her Wonder Woman from within.
Hand-gestures, double entendre, and fast speaking Southern-charm immediately snares the audience and leads viewers into Dixie’s hypnotic spell. Dixie engages and encourages people to shine. Her show, full of stories, touches the audience and leaves them with Dixie’s home-spun recipe for drinks, life, and a personal Happy Hour.
